Nathan Turner to Speak at Design Bloggers Conference

nathan-turner-498As a fourth-generation Californian, Nathan Turner grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, surrounded by a large, extended family. Deeply rooted in California’s heritage, Nathan’s childhood took him to many of the state’s most quintessential environments: From weekends family spent at his family’s Northern California ranch where they would ride horses, raise cattle and cook farm-to-table meals (decades before it became a cultural obsession) to long afternoons in the family sailboat, exploring every nook of San Francisco’s TK Bay, to summers spent in La Jolla and Laguna Beach.

Nathan’s upbringing also took him beyond his beloved home state at a young age. He learned the value of travel early in life, and now has traveled to every continent. And it’s both Nathan’s passion for traveling the world and his intimate familiarity with California’s design heritage that has informed his own aesthetic. Whether inspiration comes in the form of his take on English/Bohemian style, or from some of his favorite places such as Istanbul and Mexico city, Nathan draws upon this broad range of aesthetic influences to give his work a distinct cultural layering that is as once global in scope and highly personal to each client.

Upon moving to Los Angeles, Nathan successfully merged his greatest passions- design, travel and food-into his eponymous shop. Nathan’s store has become an expression of his years traveling, his love of simply prepared, elegant food, and a commitment to exploring his ever-evolving sense of interior design. As a faithful source for the country’s leading interior decorators, as well as some of the most stylish individuals from coast to coast, Nathan’s shop has become an iconic part of the Los Angeles design landscape. The consummate host, Nathan has become known for his stylish and entertaining parties. Having played host to the likes of Carolina Herrera, India Hicks, Carolyne Roehm, Anya Hindmarch, Chris Benz and Soledad Twombly to name a few, Nathan is known for creating highly elegant affairs that nevertheless maintain an accessible friendliness that epitomizes his version of the well-lived life.

Nathan starred in Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators, a show focusing on the lives of successful Los Angeles based designers as they navigate the high-pressured design world. In 2008 Nathan Turner for Elite Leather was launched and can be found in Bloomingdale’s stores across the country. In 2012, Abrams published Nathan Turner’s American Style, a lifestyle book authored by Turner. Nathan is a regular entertaining expert on The Today Show, and has appeared on Extra, CBS The Early Show, TBS’s Movie and a Makeover, CW Now, Good Day LA, and Good Day NY. Nathan’s designs, parties and products have been featured in major national and regional publications including Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, Vogue, Veranda, Domino, Vogue Living, Town & Country, House Beautiful, Details, Food & Wine, and C magazine.

Suzanne Kasler to Speak at Phipps Plaza

On Sunday afternoon, March 2, prior to the Welcome Reception that kicks off the Design Bloggers Conference, we’ve arranged an excursion for attendees to Phipps Plaza in Atlanta. There you’ll see some of the latest kitchen designs, shop, and hear Suzanne Kasler share her thoughts on design.

Suzanne Kasler is inspired. As the principal of Atlanta-based Suzanne Kasler Interiors, she often asserts that “a room should be collected, not decorated.” Incorporating the personal collections of her clients with fine art and antiques, contemporary pieces and custom-designed furniture, Suzanne’s meaningful interiors straddle that rare middle ground between sophisticate and ingénue. As a graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning, Suzanne brings a comprehensive knowledge of interior architecture and decorative arts to her design work.

Suzanne’s classic interiors have been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, House Beautiful, Traditional Home and Veranda. Her widely published work has won numerous awards, placing Suzanne among the elite of America’s top designers. For the past three years, Suzanne was named to Elle Décor’s “A-List” of top designers in the country, and for the past two years, Suzanne was chosen for Architectural Digest’s AD100. In the fall of 2009, Rizzoli published Suzanne’s first book, Inspired Interiors, and in October 2013 they published her second book, Timeless Style, a lavishly illustrated volume that showcases her residential success, from her own elegant Regency-style house in Atlanta’s Buckhead to a family-oriented New England classic stone house in Greenwich, and a glamorous neoclassical country house in Columbus, Georgia.

In 2008, Suzanne launched a line of furniture for Hickory Chair, along with a collection of lighting for Visual Comfort. Her signature style of casual elegance has since been interpreted into a line of rugs with Safavieh, fine art with Soicher-Marin, accessories with Ballard, and fabrics with Lee Jofa.

Although her brand has expanded exponentially over the last few years, Suzanne remains true to her passion for designing interiors: “Being able to work as a designer is a gift—an amazing opportunity to connect to people and design spaces that inspire them.”

Jason Oliver Nixon to Host Design Bloggers Hall of Fame Awards

Have you made your nominations for the Design Bloggers Hall of Fame yet? Nominations will close on December 21 - make sure your favorite blogs are recognized!

The awards will be presented at lunch during the first day of the Design Bloggers Conference on February 27 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. We’re thrilled to announce that the host for the awards ceremony will be design/lifestyle writer Jason Oliver Nixon.

Jason Oliver Nixon doesn’t just understand the fabulous life; he knows how to unearth it. Far beyond his ability to quote Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Draper, and Noel Coward, it is Nixon’s laser-sharp ability to discover what is truly cutting edge and unique that has led to his current role as a lifestyle guru and authority on taste.

The Global Lifestyle Editor at Delta Sky magazine, the in-flight publication of the world’s largest airline, Nixon has the task of trend-spotting and cultivating and searching out global content and talent to ensure that the publication maintains an inspired, innovative vision. He lives out of an acid-orange Globe-Trotter suitcase, constantly on the prowl for the latest and greatest finds.

Nixon began his publishing career at Condé Nast Traveler, where he served as an Associate Editor and new products editor for three years, covering the travel-product beat and writing features and front-of-book stories. He held a senior editorial role at Fodor’s Travel Guides’ book division and was the Editor of New Media on the fodors.com website before turning to television. He was the launch Field Producer for E! Entertainment’s “True Hollywood Stories” series and the Executive Producer of Robin Leach’s Gourmet Getaways at the Food Network and simultaneously wrote regular restaurant reviews for Paper magazine and a column for the James Beard Foundation’s monthly newsletter. Nixon was awarded with a James Beard Scholarship to attend the esteemed French Culinary Institute, and as a result, was inspired to write the book New York’s 50 Best Places to Eat Brunch.

Nixon eventually left the Food Network to return to the publishing world in affluent Palm Beach, Florida where he launched the Ocean Drive magazine spin-off Ocean Drive’s Palm Beach, a luxury-targeted, general-interest publication. Later, he became the Editor in Chief and Editorial Director of Niche Media LLC, successfully re-launching Hamptons magazine as a controlled-circulation, general-interest summer weekly to target high-end consumers. The magazine’s overwhelming success led Nixon to subsequently launch several highly targeted regional magazines for the group, including Gotham, Los Angeles Confidential, Aspen Peak, Boston Common, and Capitol File as well as Niche’s custom-publishing division, where he developed branded publications for companies such as Tourneau. Nixon has served as the Chief Luxury Officer for the Four Seasons Hotels magazine where he oversaw all design, style, fashion, and accessories coverage for the publication and served as a roving brand ambassador.

Nixon contributes regularly as a writer, producer, stylist, fashion consultant, wrangler, and lifestyle guru to such publications as Virtuoso Life, Town & Country, and Entrée, the Neiman Marcus magazine. He makes frequent appearances on E! and MTV as a style correspondent. Nixon is also one half of the Brooklyn-based interior design firm Madcap Cottage (f/k/a John Loecke Inc.), whose colorful projects have been published in magazines and newspapers such as Domino, House Beautiful, Country Living, Better Homes and Gardens, the New York Times, British House & Garden, and the New York Post. Nixon curates a global style and design blog entitled Demystifying Design that captures his and John Loecke’s far-flung adventures and fabulous finds as they scour the world for Madcap Cottage.

A native of Tampa, Florida, Nixon is a graduate of Maine’s Colby College. Nixon splits his time between a row house in Brooklyn and a renovated schoolhouse in New York’s Catskill Mountains, where he can be found puttering in his garden and Tweeting about his plants.
